Get to Know Our Preschool Teacher – Rachel O’Hearn
Rachel lives in Jenison with her husband of 2 years and their Australian Shepherd, Oliver. The three of them enjoy spending time together and visiting parks and beaches. Rachel and her husband love biking, swimming, and trying new things. Rachel spent much of her life as a gymnast and cheerleader and still loves to tumble when she can. Rachel is looking forward to starting the school year at St. Robert Catholic School and meeting her new students.
Q: What are you most looking forward to in the new school year?
A: I am most looking forward to seeing how this community forms. I’m excited to get to know all the families and members of this wonderful community and watch the growth of the school. This will be my first year teaching in a Catholic School and I am very excited to incorporate faith teachings into the classroom.
Q: Who is your favorite saint?
A: My favorite saint is Saint John-Baptiste de la Salle who is the Patron Saint of Teachers and the Catholic Church.
Q: Who inspires you?
A: I am inspired by other teachers that have been in the classroom for many years. Being a teacher is a very special job and I look up to those who have helped so many and continue to cherish their talent for teaching.
Q: What would you tell prospective parents about their child’s educational experience?
A: As a preschool teacher I have met many nervous parents sending their kids to school for the first time. Sending your baby off to be away from you for a few hours is not an easy thing to do. I want parents to know that my goal is make sure their children’s first school experience is successful. It is important to me that the kids get a sense of what school is and that learning can be fun!
Q: What has teaching taught you?
A: Teaching has taught me that even as an adult I never stop learning. Whether I am learning something new about a child in my classroom or I am educating myself about a new approach to a topic- my knowledge continues to grow!
Q: What most excites you about instituting a STEM focused curriculum?
A: I am most excited to see how the kids respond to a STEM focused curriculum. I love watching the “light-bulb” go off for the kids when they learn something new or share something that they already know as it relates to a topic. I think STEM is a fun and exciting way for learners to figure out how far their knowledge will take them.
